A4 – Gestures and Body Language

Using gestures in a speech will add meaning and emphasis to the spoken word. Used properly, your hands, facial expressions and whole body can be a real addition to your public speaking armoury and greatly improve your effectiveness.

Gestures should naturally complement your voice, adding value rather than being inserted simply because you feel they are necessary. They should feel natural and improve the speech.

When selecting the subject for this assignment it is important that it is one which allows for a range of gestures. They need to be suitable to your style of speaking and not distract from the overall message of the speech.

Your evaluator will be looking for a variety of gestures, using the following guidelines to assess whether you are ready to move on to the next speaking assignment.
