West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – January 11th

Chaired by Terry Nunn, this meeting saw the last of the club competitions – the evaluation competition. Competitors were each invited to evaluate the target speech “91 Days”, which was delivered by Rowena Hawtin. Congratulations to Sue Shaw and Ray Finn, who will be representing the club at the Area competitions.

 

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – December 14th

This, the final meeting of the calendar year, was our annual speech competition. Chaired by Neil Lakeland, members of the club were treated to a variety of different speeches from the competitors.

Congratulations to Aly Harrold, Sue Shaw and Frani Hoskins, who were placed first, second and third respectively.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – November 23rd

Chaired by Ann Peters, with the impromptu speaking session delivered by Eddie Barnes, this meeting contained two speeches from the advanced manual.

Dave King delivered an entertaining C1 “Impromptu Speech”, which was evaluated by Monty Knight-Olds and Sue Shaw delivered her C9 “Speaking without Notes” presentation, which was evaluated by Terry Nunn.

The General Evaluator for the evening was Ray Finn.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – November 8th

Chaired by Ravi Kalsi, this meeting was structured around the Club’s annual topics competition.  In total, eight members competed – with a mix of more established members and newer members. Congratulations to all contestants who took part, especially Sue Shaw who will be representing the club at the area competition.

After the interval, Joel Macey practised his university presentation, which was evaluated by Aly Harrold, and a small topics session took place. The evening was evaluated by Neil Lakeland.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – October 26th

Examining how to deliver a good evaluation, members were treated to a workshop delivered by Sue Shaw.

Covering the main elements of the evaluation, including its purpose, members examined how to structure a good speech evaluation, as well as the challenges of topics evaluation and what to cover in a general evaluation.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – October 12th

Chaired by Jackie Clarke, her first time chairing a meeting, members were treated to an A1 “Making a Start” speech by Frani Hoskins, one of our newer members, which was evaluated by Eddie Barnes.  Following this, Monty Knight-Olds, attempted an impromptu speech (one of the advanced assignments), which was evaluated by Rowena Hawtin.

Our topics session was run by Victoria Sheridan and evaluated by Fred Lemont, with the general evaluation for the evening delivered by Neil Lakeland.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – September 28th

Chaired by Terry Nunn, this evening included three set speeches, a topics session delivered by Rowena Hawtin and a General Evaluation by Monty Knight-Olds.

Claire McConchie, in her first speech at the club, delivered an impressive A1 “Making a Start” on the subject of her childhood growing up on a farm in Cornwall. Entitled “Clotted Cream and Cornish Pasties”, members were treated to a gastronomic trip. This speech was evaluated by Ravi Kalsi.

Next up was Ann Etridge who spoke about punctuality and her struggles with it as a child and later as an adult. This was her A4 “Use of Gestures and Body Language” speech and was successfully evaluated by Fred Lemont. Members were also treated to another A4 speech, this time by Alison Nixon, on how to reverse the signs of aging from the inside out. Covering healthy eating and looking after your body, it was the perfect contrast to the gastronomic delights of Claire’s speech. Alison was successfully evaluated by Sue Shaw.

The evening’s topic session was evaluated by Ray Finn and the evening summed up by Monty Knight-Olds.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – September 14th

As part of our series of workshops, designed to help members improve on specific aspects of public speaking, Michael Breeze kindly presented a session on topics and the art of impromptu speaking.

Members were treated to an interactive session in which a topic was delivered, group evaluated and then separately evaluated by one of our newer members. In between, members contributed their thoughts as to what makes a good topics session, how to prepare yourself to be a topics chairman and some tips and techniques to delivering a good topic.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – August 24th

Chaired by Eddie Barnes, saw one of our newer members – Amina – deliver her first speech (A1 Making a Start) on the subject of cookery.  Members were also treated to speeches from Victoria (A4 Gestures and Body Language) and Rowena (A7 Use of Notes and Microphone). These were evaluated by Aly Harrold, Terry Nunn and Sue Shaw respectively.

Our topics session was run by Monty Knight-Olds and evaluated by Ann Peters. The General Evaluator for the evening was Neil Lakeland
