West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – June 13th

Chaired by our new President – Frani Hoskins – this evening saw one of our newer members, Claire  undertake her A3 “Mean what you say” speech  on whether the internet is a force for good or evil. The second speech was from Faye – one of our more experienced speakers – with an assignment from the advanced section around her history and how she became involved in Speakers’ clubs.  These were evaluated by Monty and Sue Shaw respectively.

Our topics session, where all get to practise the art of impromptu speaking, was chaired by Rowena and evaluated by Neil Lakeland.   The general evaluation of the evening was given by Ann Peters.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – May 23rd

We started this evening with our club AGM and voted in the committee for the next year. Congratulations to Frani Hoskins, Chairperson; Sue Shaw, Secretary and Lorraine Burwood, Education Director. Ravi Kalsi, Rowena Hawtins and Neil Lakeland remain our Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Webmaster, respectively.

After the break we has a very interesting and challenging Topics session chaired by Ravi. Well done to all that took part.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – April 11th

Join us at The Bull, East Farleigh for an evening of public speaking.   This meeting will be chaired by Ray Finn, with impromptu speaking section – Topics – chaired by Frani Hoskins.

This meeting will form part of the planning for the impending Hopper Cup – the team speaking competition within Kent.  The topic for this year’s Cup is “We don’t care anymore”.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – March 28th

This, our joint Kent Area meeting with Chaucer Speakers’ Club and Thanet Speakers’ Club contained two set speeches and an entertaining impromptu speaking session.

Sheila Gomez, from Thanet Speakers’ Club, successfully passed her A3 “Mean what you say” speech on the subject of her speaking journey, whilst Jackie Clarke from West Kent passed her A5 “Using your voice effectively” on the subject of how to choose a dog. Jackie will now receive her intermediate certificate for completing the first five assignments.  The speeches were evaluated by Stewart Thomson (Chaucer Speakers’ Club) and Doug Weale (Thanet Speakers’ Club).

Topics, our session on impromptu speaking, was chaired by Ray Finn with contributions from everyone in the audience. This was evaluated by Adrian Hyner (Chaucer Speakers’ Club).

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – March 14th

Chaired by Frani Hoskins, with Gary Smith as the General Evaluator, this meeting contained a rehearsal for an A10 “Showpiece” speech by Lorraine Burwood, and a prescription speech by Faye Andrews that was evaluated by Terry Nunn.

Topics was chaired by Chris Frost and evaluated by Rowena Hawtin.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – February 14th

Chaired by Ravi Kalsi, members were treated to a Valentine’s evening of public speaking, with Tereza successfully completing her A1 “Making a Start” speech on “Destiny” and Eddie Barnes giving an entertaining prescription speech on “what’s in a name”.  Both of these speeches, which were evaluated by Ray Finn and Terry Nunn respectively, were a pass.

The topics session was delivered by Ann Etridge and evaluated by Neil Lakeland, with the General Evaluator for the evening being Fay Andrews.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – September 27th

Chaired by Rowena Hawtin, members were treated to three speeches – an A3 “Mean What You Say”, an A4 “Gestures and Body Language” and an A5 “Use of Voice” – which were evaluated by Neil Lakeland, Gary Smith and Terry Nunn.

The topics session was run by Claire McConchie, her first time doing this, and evaluated by Eddie Barnes. The evening was evaluated by Chris Frost.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – September 13th

Chaired by Monty Knight-Olds, this meeting saw the club join the national conversation around evaluation. Members were invited to share their thoughts on the role of evaluation within the club setting, what we want evaluation to look like and the current process of speech evaluations.

Topics, where we tested our skills at impromptu speaking, was chaired by Rowena Hawtin and evaluated by Terry Nunn. Overall evaluation was delivered by Sue Shaw.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting – Maidstone – August 23rd

With a change from the usual Association of Speakers’ Clubs (ASC) format, this evening was a Cogers Event, chaired by Trevor Kenning from Thanet Speakers’ Club. The opening address, given by Monty Knight-Olds, contained a number of topics that were further debated including, the Royal Family, Brexit, the American presidency, electric cars, HS2 and Bruce Forsyth.

With participation from most of the members present, the evening was evaluated by Neil Lakeland.
