Happy New Year – Our First Public Speaking Meeting of 2011

What a great start to the year !

Some 15 club members and one new visitor packed the room to officially close off 2010 and get us all ready to speak in 2011.

Members all brought along a 4 minute speech about christmas and the new year. A wondeful range of topics was covered, from the true origins of christmas to the “commercial” nature of the holiday in the 21st Century.

There were no speech evaluations – although Robert Adams did give a general overview of the meeting. He gave a special mention to Jean-Louis Abbyad who was brave enough to join in on his first visit.

Guests are always welcome at WKSC – To enquire about visiting or membership email our Club Secretary Sue Shaw or call 01622 750879 (weekday evenings). Although we always encourage participation from new visitors, we’re happy to let you sit back and just watch the fun!

West Kent Speakers Club – Meeting Review – 8th Dec

Due to weather and venue problems our meeting didn’t take place as planned…

Those who did attend managed to enjoy a purely social get-together with festive food and a drink.

The Xmas meeting is now re-scheduled for 12th Jan!

West Kent Speakers Club – Meeting Review – 24th November

Another fun evening at West Kent Speakers Club!

Our focus at this meeting was our Annual Speech Evaluation Contest

Evaluations are the secret ingredient at Speakers Club. Knowing how to analyse a speech and give constructive advice and a fair critique helps everybody learn and progress in the art of public speaking.

In the competition, a speech is delivered and the contestants each evaluate it in turn, secretly from one another. Officials acting as chaperones and “Distractors” ensure no one has an advantage in planning their evaluation.

Three special sets of congratulations go to:-

  • Neil Lakeland – who delivered the speech (his B3 – Speech Construction assignment) and was passed by all eight evaluators. He moves on to his B4 Gestures speech.
  • Celia Hardy – who only became an offical member at this meeting and stunned everyone, giving a really great evaluation, and was pronounced runner up.
  • Mark Stock (aka Marc Lemezma) – Who won the competition.

Our next meeting on December 8th is our Christmas social

West Kent Speakers Club – Meeting Review 10th November

Another exciting, different and absolutely fun evening at WKSC this week!

We had two cracking speeches:-

Ravi Kalsi delivered his B3 Speech (Speech Construction) – A very funny talk about the possible use of insects as a source of proteins.

Aly Harrold spoke about the ravages of time on the human body for her B8 (Use of Humour Speech).

Both speakers were given an emphatic thumbs up from their evaluators.

Gary Smith enlightened us with an “Evaluation Masterclass”.  Giving constructive feedback is the lifeblood of Speakers Club – and all who watch a good evaluator will learn from what they have to say about the speech being reviewed.

We rounded the evening off with an unusual topics session, run by Fay Andrews. We were each given an object from Fay’s cupboard and had to “convince” the board of a Christmas Catalogue company to include our item. Great fun and very different.  A special mention again to Celia Hardy – who kept going when others would have given up – and on only her 2nd meeting!

West Kent Speakers Club – Meeting Report- 27th October

Another full room again at WKSC – good to see so many Maidstone and Kent people keen to develop their speaking skills!

The first part of the evening was a workshop on the use of voice – led by Faye Andrews. Lots of great practical advice for all!

Then followed our annual topics competition. A dozen of us each tried to make the best of the line “Oh no – it’s that time of year”

Congrats to Matt Kyle (winner)  and Faye Andrews (Runner Up). They go on to represent West Kent Speakers in the Area Speaking Contest in February.

Special mention goes to Celia who joined in the competition on her very first meeting – and gave the experienced members a real run for their money!

The next meeting of West Kent Speakers Club will be on Wednesday 10th November 7:30 at the Stone Street Club, Maidstone.  Joining details here.

We meet twice a month to develop our public speaking skills. We do this in a friendly, relaxed environment where all can learn at their own pace.

Meeting Review – West Kent Speakers Club – 13th October

A fantastic meeting indeed!

20 speakers club members enjoyed a great evening of public speaking.

Fred Lemont gave us a “Light” topics session – in contrast to the “heavy topics” of late. Challenging, educational and fun!

Congrats to Matt Kyle for passing his B8 Speech “Use Of Humor” – Hardly a surprise as his speeches are always amusing.

Special congratulations to Anne Peters on passing her B10 “Masterpiece Speech” – which was jointly evaluated by Gary Smith and guest evaluator Trevor Kenning.

West Kent Speakers Club – Meeting Review 22nd September – Maidstone

Competition Time!

8 Members, some new to public speaking and some old hands, took part in our annual speech competition.

This is always an important date in our calendar, as the winner can move forward onto the Area, Regional and potentially National speech competitions.

Congratulations to our winning public speaker for 2010 Ann Peter.

A massive well done to Ravi Kelsi who was runner up in his first year as a member of WKSC.

The success of our newer members proves how becoming a member can really make a difference to your public speaking skills.

Meeting Review – West Kent Speakers Club – 8th September

12 members attended the first Sepember meeting of WKSC.

Chairman for the evening was Graham Pearce and Neil Lakeland acted as Timekeeper. As a warm up the chairman asked everyone to explain, in a sentence or two, why they’d joined the club. Reasons the members gave included:  to overcome a stammer; to improve sales techniques and because speaking in public is good for you.

Robert Adams ran a Topics Session based on ‘subjects that make him raise his voice whilst talking to himself’. Members gave their opinions on issues ranging from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to Dennis the Menace.

Eddie Barnes gave a seven minute Impromptu Speech entitled, ‘O to be in England’, in which he explained why his favourite place to go on holiday is on a canal boat, exploring the Inland Waterways of England.

Evaluations were given by Ann Peters and Monty Knights-Old. After a couple more topics were handed out at random by the chairman, Chris Frost rounded off the evening with a general evaluation.

Meeting report kindly submitted by Karen Thomas

WKSC Meeting Report 25th August

Despite the wind, rain and Champions league football, members enjoyed a varied evening at West Kent Speakers Club!

In the Chair was Karen Thomas who for the warm up wanted to know “the last time we wore Wellies”.

This was followed by B7 Use of Notes from Sue Shaw who was also using occasion as a dress rehearsal for her speakers test with National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies in a few weeks time. It was a different evening as the talk was illustrated with a number of props and was 30 minutes rather than the usual 6 – 8 minutes. The title was “In the Footsteps of Paddington Bear”.

Topics was chaired by Matt who  ran a challenging and thought provoking session. Terry, Gary and Cliff gave evaluations.

The next meeting of West Kent Speakers Club takes place at 7:30 PM on September 8th at the Stone Street Club Maidstone.

We meet twice a month to enjoy the art of public speaking and to help each other develop our communications skills.

West Kent Speakers Club Meeting Report August 11th

Another fun and in some ways very different meeting at West Kent Speakers Club tonight.

Congratulations to David King on passing his B2 assignment, (Mean what you say) – in which the task is to speak confidently, passionately and convincingly on your chosen topic. David entertained us and certainly convinced us of his opinions about the “hero” General Haig.

Mark Stock, in pursuit of his advanced public speaking certificate, demonstrated his microphone skills in a unique way by playing one of his business podcasts. This was evaluated by Fay Andrews. Although she is one of our most experienced speaking club members, this was a “real challenge” for Fay as it was the first time this assignment had ever been done in this way.

Our next meeting will be on 25th August. Full details will be published here very soon.
