West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – January 22nd

Taking place at the Granary, Larkfield, this meeting will be chaired by Claire and contain two set speeches by our newest members.

Delivering their A1 – Making a Start – will be Chris Williams and Sachin Gera. The impromptu speaking section will be chaired by Ann Peters and evaluated by Suzanne. There will also be a mini-workshop, delivered by Neil, on coping with the press.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – January 8th

For the first meeting of 2020, we will be holding our topics and evaluation competitions.

Chaired by Suzanne, the evaluation competition will take place first, followed by an interval and then the topics contest. The judges for the evaluation competition will be Terry, Chris Frost and Frani Hoskins, Foe the topics competition it’ll be Terry and Neil.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – December 11th

Our annual speech competition and Christmas social event took place this year at the Early Bird in Grove Green.

Congratulations to Sue Shaw who was successful in the competition with a speech on the environmental and social impact of distressed clothing. Steve Poile was runner-up, with his speech on the original of a citizen’s powers of arrest.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – November 27th

At our usual venue of the Granary in Larkfield, this evening focused on evaluations and providing feedback to speakers.

Led by Sue Shaw, an interesting speech on introverts and extroverts (delivered by Anne) presented a useful platform for practising feedback on.There was set criteria looking at what the speaker had excelled at and recommendations for improvement with how suggestions could be put into practice.

Following an interval there were exercises to improve vocal variety followed by members and visitors sharing favourite poetry and prose.

Taking place at Early Bird, Grove Green, this was an evening devoted to impromptu speaking.

Chaired by our President, Frani, the evening comprised a workshop on impromptu speaking from Ray Finn followed by a topics session. The topics session was evaluated by Sue Shaw.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – October 23rd

Another fun evening of public speaking was had at the Granary, Larkfield Chaired by Neil Lakeland, there will be two speeches – an A6 Vocabulary and Word Pictures delivered by Claire on the subject of a Frustrated Gardener and a prescription speech on the emotive subject of dementia by Sue. These were evaluated by Terry Nunn (for the A6) and by the whole club (for the prescription speech). Both successfully completed their assignments.

In addition to the speeches, there was a workshop on the use of the lectern delivered by Ray and topics, the art of impromptu speech, was chaired by Lorraine. These were ably evaluated by Sue. The general evaluation of the evening was conducted by Frani, our club President.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – October 9th

Taking place at the Early Bird, Grove Green, this evening was chaired by Chris Frost and featured two speeches. The first, by Frani, was a recital of a creative writing piece she’d devised for U3A and the second, delivered by Sue, was a fascinating account of her trip to the Niagara Falls. Both of these were evaluated by the club as a whole.

The topics session, where we practised our impromptu speaking, was chaired by Suzanne and evaluated by Lorraine. The General Evaluation of the evening was delivered by Terry.

West Kent Speakers Club – Maidstone – September 25th

Taking place at the Granary, Larkfield, this evening comprised two speeches by Eddie and Ann Peters. The first, by Eddie, extolled the virtues of the satellite navigation systems and smartphone apps, cleverly contrasting these modern developments with some technology seen in 1960s films. The second was a narrative speech concerning Ann’s childhood, which gripped everyone up until the end. Both of these were evaluated by the club and facilitated by Terry.

Topics, the art of impromptu speaking, was delivered by Lorraine, and evaluated by Neil. The General Evaluation for the evening was given by Ann Peters.

Taking place at the Early Bird, Grove Green, this evening was chaired by Monty Knight-Olds and featured two set speeches. The first, by Suzanne, was an A3 “Mean What You Say” speech that exhorted the humble French baguette, The second, delivered by Lorraine, was a C1 Impromptu speech from the advanced manual. These were evaluated by Sue Shaw and Neil Lakeland.
